Could this be the sharpest drop in US crime and overdose deaths in over a century?

CLAIM — Homicides in the US plunged 21% in 2025 compared to 2024, marking the largest single-year drop on record and bringing murder rates to the lowest in over 125 years; drug overdose deaths dropped another ~20-21%, with fentanyl trafficking also declining.[1][2][3]

VERDICT — TRUE.[4][2]

EVIDENCE — A January 2026 Council on Criminal Justice (CCJ) report analyzed data from 35-40 large US cities and found homicides dropped 21% in 2025 vs. 2024 (922 fewer homicides), the largest single-year decline on record; the national rate is projected at ~4.0 per 100,000, likely the lowest since 1900 (125+ years) pending final FBI data later in 2026.[2][1][5] CDC provisional data confirms drug overdose deaths fell ~21% through August 2025 (e.g., ~73,000 in the 12 months ending Aug 2025 vs. ~92,000 prior), with synthetic opioid (primarily fentanyl) deaths dropping sharply (e.g., 35-36% in some analyses); fentanyl seizures and supply potency also declined.[3][6][7] No conflicting data found; FBI preliminary trends align.[8]
